74 Little Known Uses Of Vinegar

vinegar

Original : Vinegar is a liquid produced from the fermentation of ethanol in a process that yields its key ingredient, acetic acid. Ninety percent of American Households buy vinegar. The 4 major uses are for salads, as cooking ingredients, pickling and home canning.

Anyways, I just thought that everyone should know about the usefulness of vinegar other than for the 4 things mentioned above. I’ve put together 61 other things with pictures about everything else that you can do with vinegar. I’d personally suggest using high quality white and apple cider vinegar like Heinz’s when trying the below methods. (Example : A cup of Heinz Apple Cider has 34 calories, no fat, 1.4mg of iron, and 240mg of potassium) The difference between white and apple cider vinegar is that white vinegar is made from acetous fermentation of alcohol and apple cider vinegar is made from cider or apple must.

2009.06.02 : It’s now 74 uses thanks to you!! Also, for people thinking to ingest or use apple cider vinegar internally or externally on your body, get the organic one with the ‘mother’. Skip the normal everyday distilled vinegar. The organic apple cider vinegar with the ‘mother’ is unpasteurized and contains all the good bacteria your body needs. The BRAGG bottle below is an example.

we use vinegar for all sorts of things. works on athlete’s foot (much cheaper too!). i got rid of my dandruff problem, and now i continue to use it as a conditioner. my hair is darker and softer and i don’t need any other conditioner. we use it in the washing machine and to wash the dishes (along with baking soda, works great).

I drink apple cider vinegar (1-2 T in a full glass of water, sipped, usually first thing in the morning and sometimes with or before other meals) to control acid reflux/hiatal hernia, which I suffered from constantly for well over a year before giving up on the prescribed medications and going natural. Since then I’ve only had a couple of very slight re-occurrences of the reflux problem. After a year of drinking it every morning without fail, I’ve since stopped drinking it every day, but still make sure I have a glass or two at least a couple of times a week, and I also eat a lot of salads and use it in my homemade salad dressings. It must be apple cider vinegar, though, for this purpose, not white, wine or any other kind of vinegar.

Another successful use is to get rid of persistent toenail fungus that darkens and crumbles the toenail. Put plain white vinegar in an old eye-dropper bottle and put a drop of vinegar on your infected toenail 2 or 3 times a day until the affected part of the nail grows out. I usually just remembered to do it first thing in the morning and last thing before bed. The vinegar seems to stop the fungus from spreading into the new growth of the nail and as you trim your toenail, it will disappear and not come back as long as you use the vinegar conscientiously during the growth process.

My sister-in-law swears that 1 part vinegar, 1 part water, and one part original blue Dawn dishwash liquid will remove any stain from clothes including old ones.

    Great article. Thanks!

    EAR INFECTIONS:
Domoboro solution is nothing less than plain vinegar – and is a first line defense – many ear infections are fungal related.
    KIDNEYS:
Vinegar is a good flush for kidneys – if you have kidney stones, and for many other serious kidney problems, vinegar in the diet definitely helps…

Since KIDNEY FUNCTION is linked and treated in eastern modalities with LUNG FUNCTION – if you are suffering from lung issues, your kidneys need help too, so do them both a favor.

If treating infections, definitely take vinegar internally too, as an infection is your body’s way of telling you your system is out of balance and can’t fight the bacteria/fungus/virus – so the cure is to bolster your system. Often with highly processed food our bodies are constantly challenged. Drink up!

Of course, we must insert the usual see your corporate doctor clause god forbid we can take charge or our own health without the pharma police on our doorsteps)

  9. 9 BunGirl

White vinegar is also really good for cleaning and deodorizing cages and litter pans for small animals. I work for a rabbit rescue, and we use it all the time! Thanks for the great tips.

    Loved this post! Thanks!

We use vinegar in masonry and tile work. cleaning grout haze, or cleaning bricks of excess mortar is much easier with vinegar mixed in water than water alone. if you wait too long, vinegar won’t be strong enough, and you’ll have to go to something stronger like muriatic acid.

  12. 12 Abi

You can also put a cup of vinegar in the microwave for 15 seconds (Longer if needed) and all your food that’s caked on will wipe right off.

  13. 13 Abby

    Pet Shampoo
Thanks for the tips! And I thought I knew everything about vinegar…!
I use an equal part apple cider vinegar/water mixture to wash my dog/ freshen up his coat. It is all natural and non toxic so no need to rinse! This is also a good choice for dogs with sensitive skin.

  14. 14 Caffeinatrix

    Ooh, lovely tips!

But I am compelled to mention this, I once had a painting instructor who emphatically warned his students day after day against using hot water when washing or rinsing paintbrushes. Hot water can dissolve the wax-based adhesives holding the fibers to the ferrule, expand the ferrule itself and allowing the bristles to come loose (or causing the brush handle to wobble or detach) and in the case of natural fiber brushes, hot water can strip natural oils from the bristles, making them weaker with time.

  15. 15 Ginji

I use it to mop wooden/tiled floors. Works extremely well and is much cheaper then all those products you can buy.

Vinegar appears to be able to do anything! We should try sending vinegar to Iraq, see what happens. Then perhaps sprinkle one part vinegar one part warter over various African governments!

    It’s worth a try?

  18. 18 Rob

Just used it the other day to clean the grout around the tile in my kitchen/hall/bath.

  19. 19 JJ

…anyone tried it with salt on chips? (U.S. fries)

  20. 20 Leandro Ardissone

A lot of these solutions work with any acidic liquid. Some might be vinegar only. I wish I knew.

    Cleaning Wood Floors

A bit of white vinegar, dissolved in hot water is great for cleaning hard wood floors. Much better than any commercial cleaner I’ve ever used.

I’ve heard it can damage _new_ floor finishes, though, so you might want to test first. I’ve never had a problem with it.

  23. 23 Uk_scot

A typical yank response Nick kelly.

  24. 24 Jack

Great uses, but next time no yeast infection picture.

  25. 25 dale

I use vinegar when soap won’t knock down the body odor in my arm pits. I think that the bacteria that creates the BO has basic pH or something like that. I think it works.

  26. 26 Zeekay

    Awesome, I loved it. :)

    Gotta try some of those.

  27. 27 Ava

Very interesting uses for vinegar. I will surely try quite a few of these suggestions. Thank you for the posting

Vinegar is also the secret of those cement-block-breaking martial artists. Soak your cement block to taste and let dry. Warning though do not try this at home, it will hurt when you punch or chop that block if you are not properly trained.

Also one cup white vinegar, lots of minced onion and garlic and chili peppers without the seeds and deep-fried pork cubes, season to taste some exotic soy sauce. The fat doesn’t stay in your body as the vinegar helps to flush it.

    “#59 Keep drains open.

Pour one-half box of old baking soda down the drain followed by one cup white vinegar. When the bubbling stops, run the hot water.”

I see this tip all the time. What’s the point? By mixing the vinegar and baking soda you eliminate any possible chemical effect of the two ingredients separately and get a neutral chemical. You might as well pour salt in the drain. And I’ve never seen proof of the reasons given for doing this, such as it creates heat (I’ve never noticed this; why not just use hot water instead?) or the bubbling action helps clear the drain (no proof).

anna wrote, “Domoboro solution is nothing less than plain vinegar”

This is is flat wrong. Check the ingredients of Domeboro Otic – acetic acid (vinegar) and aluminum acetate. I admit I have no idea why that latter chemical is included.

I’ve heard a 50/50 solution of vinegar and water can be used to treat ear infections, but I’ve never tried it, so use at your own risk.

  31. 31 Amy

One thing not mentioned– it can help with lice, too. Dissolves whatever glue the little buggers use to lay eggs on the hair shaft. Combing my hair and rinsing it with vinegar was the only way I got rid of my case of lice three years ago.

  32. 32 altgrave

    nick kelly for teh win!

    aluminum acetate is an antiseptic.

and, really, the yeast infection photo… yeesh.

  33. 33 Usha

This might be a silly question. Does anyone know if there are differences in white vinegar types available in the market? What is a grain based vinegar? Are Heinz vinegars usally from a non-grain source of ethanol ( such as petroleum)?

  34. 34 Spacerider

Ethanol is not a petroleum product. It’s the alcohol found in alcoholic drinks. However, it can be mixed with petroleum products and used as a cleaner fuel than just gasoline alone.

    This is a great article!

    Sore Body after Hard Exercise:

Drink a shot of vinegar (like a shot of tequila) just after you finish exercising, it keeps your muscles without any lactic acid!!! I drink it with salt and lemon for flavor.

Use # 63 I Just used a white vinegar yesterday to strip the varnish off my old hardwood floors. I mixed it 50/50 with warm water and ran a mop over the floor several times getting it good and wet, Then I waited about a half hour and used a basic floor scraper and all the old glue from some tile floor that was installed over the hardwood came up easily including the varnish. I have tried using the hardwood floor striper that sells in the store for $10 to $20 a gallon (which is basically a gallon of superglue remover) with harmful vapors and it doesn’t even come close to how well vinegars work.

Um, you took photos from Flickr that did NOT have the Creative Commons tag, nor did you give credit to the photographers. There are many photos online that explicitly give permission to share with credit, and so your choice to simply grab whichever ones took your fancy is a sign of laziness and ignorance.

was it the yeast infection photo?

  41. 41 TH

Hey one of the photographers – get over it. Everybody steals from everybody. The makers of this page are doing you a favor. You should take it as a compliment that they’re using your pictures. Shut up and shoot some vinegar.

Whats the use of rubbery chicken bones?

  44. 44 sarah

hey, “one of the photographers” is right.

there is plenty of stuff available online that would be usable under the creative commons license. it’s not cool to take and use others’ works without their permission.

the writer of this blog is making money from ad revenue and would probably be mad if someone stole the content that he/she clearly spent a lot of time creating.

    not cool, dude. not cool.

Anyone tried it before? Do I use white vinegar or Apple Cider Vinegar in this method? And diluting 50:50 with water means that if I have a 100ml bottle, fill 50ml of it with vinegar and 50ml of it with water. Am I interpreting it correctly?

Lol wut. Vinegar does not remove fat from the body.

Eating fewer calories than your body burns is the ONLY thing that removes fat from the body.

And next time you decide to run a picture of a yeast infection, have the common decency to give a NSFW warning. good grief.

loved everything you use vinegar for cleaning. I have a new pet and I clean all the time. I am using it on my kitchen floor right now. It needs to dry and I will buy gallons of vinegar starting tomorrow thank you soooooo much

  71. 71 amanda

great post! i swear a go through a gallon of the stuff a week! i find it interesting that most Americans who suffer from reflux, GERD, or heartburn spend millions of dollars a year on antacids and perscription acid blocking medication when most people with this problem are producing TOO LITTLE stomach acid instead of TOO MUCH. This causes food in the stomach to begin to rot and ferment thus causing gas and regurgitation. So next time you find yourself reaching for the tums drink a little apple cider vinegar instead.

    Another useful hint for vinegar,

when you eat something too spicy hot (habenero, jalepeno, wasabi) you can quickly get rid of the burn by dabbing your tounge with vinegar.

  72. 72 Proudly South African

I love this site, I have tried a number of the ideas and thye really do work. Hey guys, when posting comments please ensure that your spelling is correct
    EG: Tounge = tongue (Amanda).

    Cheers

  73. 73 whiffywillow

Fantastic lot of information but if it wasn’t already mentioned, you should never use everyday vinegar on the skin or hair – yep, you can consume it in small amounts in recipes etc but for application to the skins surface you need to use Apple Cider Vinegar.

  74. 74 Marilyn

Please, edit out the photo of the yeast infection or at least give us a warning. NASTY!

For cleaning drains, I’ve always heard 1 cup of salt, followed by 1 cup of baking soda, and then 1 quart of boiling water.

I agree that vinegar soda = neutral.

  75. 75 fran

    thanks for all the info….

  76. 76 calamity

LOL.. my friends tease me about being Ms. Vinegar because every time they have a problem my recommendation is to use vinegar… What can I say it… its great for everything!!

  77. 77 Kim

Calamity, you remind me of the father on My Big Fat Greek Wedding – except his “thing” was Windex.

Yeast infection – you can also use plain yogurt. I’m skeptical about the vinegar for yeast infections, however, simply because that would mean that douching would resolve a womans problem, and that’s not the case. I didn’t need the visual.

I use bleach in my garbage disposal to freshen it up. I would NEVER use bleach in my toilet tank, however, as it will corrode the metal and you will have visits from the plumber in the future (dad’s a plumber). Vinegar works great for getting rid of mineral deposits. I use for coffeemakers and my wachine machine..which is really old with lots of mineral deposits.. except I use 1 gallon of vinegar in a wash cycle – no clothing – and add 1 cup of baking soda.

I can vouch for the swimmers ear solution, but I use 1 part alcohol to two parts vinegar in a dropper bottle.

I will use in the future when I boil my eggs!

  78. 78 Kimmy

Use vicks vapor rub to get rid of athletes foot (I don’t know about the vinegar).

  79. 79 Corey

Nobody posted here for a while but I saw this and (said or not) I must say that white vinger not only helps sun burn but real burns. You like stick your hand in boiling water do this on while you wait for help. If its real bad soak it in viniger, it will sotp the pain, then sometimes it will start to burn again in vineger, take it out, then it not burn out of the vineger for a bit, soon it will end up burning again, put it right back in the viniger, then after a burns again pull it out. Repeat this till the pain stops. It doesn’t scar at all, it makes the difference between mutation (bad burns look bad) and nothing.

  80. 80 steve

Great article thanks ….i never knew this stuff could do so much !!!

  81. 81 barefoot golightly

Aphelion–I can’t vouch for apple cider vinegar “burning fat” but I would like to point out that a lot of research shows that burning more calories than you can consume is not necessarily the only way to lose weight.

One thing that science has shown is that apple cider vinegar might help to balance blood sugar. Insulin responses have been shown to create excess belly fat. Therefore, if insulin and blood sugar are controlled, a person might lose weight. Fat might in fact be as much a matter of hormones (insulin) than lack of activity. Of course, more than likely they go hand in hand.

Also, for people thinking to ingest apple cider vinegar (which I do highly recommend for colds, sinuses, and yeast issues) get the organic with “mother”. Skip the heinz. It’s better than the alternative, but not as good as organic apple cider with “mother”. This is the unpastuerized version, which means it retains all the good bacteria your body needs. You won’t get sick from it, as e coli cannot grow in vinegar. They distill it so it looks pretty when you buy it (clear and white, as opposed to brown and murky).

    Good luck all!

    Barefoot

I just sprayed undiluted white vinegar onto the grout in my shower and scrubbed, and the orange pre-mold (and some of the black mold) came right off! A quick spray of vinegar after each shower should help keep the shower mold-free from here on out…

    Very interesting,
I produce wine vinegar from fermented wild berries, flowers etc. in our farm in West Wales. No chemichals, hand picked.naturally processed.
I am the only one producing such a product so there is little knowledge about the properties of this specific vinegar
    The berries I produce vinegar from grow wild in our farm and are mainly choosen for their healing properties.I produce about 15 different types at the moment and looking forward to some diffent ones. Just to mention same of my vinegar and their properies;
    Blackberry good for gout,eczma
Elderflower good for chest complaints,as expectorant, rheumatism
Dandelion good for liver ,as a diuretic,,good for spleen, pancreas, kidney
Red Clover as spring tonic for thinning and purifying the blood, for asthma
Oak leaves as astringent and antiseptic, throat inflammation and infection
Apple leaves with stronger properties than apples.good for pork dishes
Wild damsond really good salade dressing
Rowan berry good for game dishes, marinades etc
Sloe berry good for lamb dishes
    Many more available.
In addition to vinegar properties my vinegars have the benefit of addinational properties of the berries they are produced from.

  87. 87 Allergic to Apple's

It is rare to find something that really in truly works with no “if ands or buts”
I have a candita yeast problem for years now it would grow in my eyebrows
and make them itch and be scaley unless you used this keokotazole cream.
After reading this site i took some apple cider vinegar put it on a cotton ball
and wiped all over my forehead, it nuked that yeast, it inflamed it so bad i had to wear a band aid, after 2 weeks it went away nd i have to say it is healed.
If you have yeast it will nuke it! My dermatologist said “THIS WILL BE YOUR FRIEND FOR LIFE” “THE YEAST THAT IS” MY hats off to ACV.. FYI you can put ACV
anywhere you suspect a skin condition, It only attacks or burns IF THERE IS A PROBLEM, it will not harm healthy tissue..

Here are a five more great uses for vinegar:

    1. Sprinkle around a campsite once per night to keep bears away (or perhaps to attract them, I forget which)
    2. Spray immediately on fresh scrapes. It will hurt like crazy, but you’ll look tough
    3. Mix with equal parts milk, bacon grease, and elderberry wine. I have no idea why
    4. Replace your little brother’s apple juice with straight Apple Cider Vinegar. Man, that’ll be funny!

    and finally…

    5. Use undilluted to wash out your eyes after looking at that yeast infection picture

  96. 96 aa

However, one should be very careful while drinking vinegar as it was suggested by some of you. It can be harmful for people with acid reflux/GERD. In general, can be harmful for your stomach otherwise it is a great cleaning remedy.

I’ve heard of some people making home-made “Automotive Windshield Washer Fluid” using 1:1 – distilled water, and white distilled vinegar.

BUT, someone “against” the recipe posted stating that Vinegar will eat away at the vehicle’s wax finish….

Anyone have any experience with this…? Considering, there are recipes/tips here, geared towards automobiles which mention The decal removal….several minutes in contact with the car could be a problem (if the deal with vinegar messing with the wax finish is real)….and well, I don’t have a problem with Icy windows here in florida, but foggy windows are more common in the morning :)

I might try that tonight and see how well it works though, if at all.

Why is everyone so bent out of shape from the yeast infection picture? Geez, it’s only a picture of a cervix (I think)…get over it. People are so touchy these days anymore…so silly! Great tips btw, I will put some more of these uses to work.

  111. 111 Lex

Lol, what’s with all these weak-stomached men, who can’t handle a picture of a yeast infection? It’s just part of the body. Yeast infections happen and are hardly the end of the world. Boys, you’ve probably even slept with a woman while she had one coming on! I know that may just blow your lunch (rolls eyes). Or is it that it’s part of the yucky vagiiiina? Either way, grow up, people…

  112. 112 ZTsMomma

You can scent your distilled white vinegar using 100% pure essential oils (not for ingesting or for putting directly on the skin though). This way you still get your family safe and environmentally friendly all-purpose vinegar without that awful smell. Just add 50-100 drops or 1/2-1 Teaspoon directly to the gallon. Use the least amount first so you can gauge how strong you want the scent to be. Also if you measure the oils do not use plastic or metal! The oils will eat away at the platic and the metal will change the chemical composition of the oils. I found small glass measuring cups at Walmart for about a dollar they look like shot glasses.

  113. 113 Chris

(ZTsMomma) Cool. It never come across my mind that you could add scent to distilled white vinegar. I’m still curious though. Won’t the vinegar eat the scent away? Yeah, I know about the plastic/metal thingy. I always use glass where possible.

Thanks for your input. Appreciate it!

  114. 114 ZTsMomma

Nope the essential oils pretty much overpower the vinegar for the most part. I mean the vinegar scent doesn’t comletely go away but it makes it a little more bearable. I think the citrusy scents work best. My favorite is lemon or lemongrass….they don’t smell like vinegar at all when I use them. The longest I have had a gallon around is a few months and they still smelled good. I am not sure though if you leave them for longer periods of time. I use my vinegar ALOT!!

  115. 115 Chris

(ZTsMomma) a few months sounds like a pretty long shelf life. I use vinegar a lot too! Daily. Will try out the scent thingy and see how it goes. Thanks again.

I wash the cloths i use for her in hot water with vinegar/baking soda. Its safe for animals especially rabbits who are allergic to almost anything and everything. And it kills odors. Everyone that comes to my house say the same thing. Wow you have a rabbit and it doesnt smell nothing! I tell them to do the same with their dogs and cats.

  122. 122 Chris

(Monet) My girlfriend tried it but it doesn’t really help her much. Will be trying out blackstrap molasses next to see if it works.

(Mich) I didn’t know that rabbits were allergic animals. Do you just use the vinegar/water mixture to clean the cages or do you use soap as well?

So many uses of vinegar. This is an excellent post. I guess I would have never know about them.

  127. 127 jonathan Bradford

This may sound like a silly question …. BUT, given that Vinegar is a liquid produced from the fermentation of ethanol in a process that yields its key ingredient, acetic acid – does this effectively mean that vinegar is alcohol FREE ?

    jonathan@grangeeurope.com

  128. 128 Chris

(jonathan Bradford) To make apple cider vinegar, you start with apple juice.

Yeast is added to the juice, which transforms the sugars in the juice to alcohol. During this time, care is taken to ensure that no oxygen is able to get to the “must”.If it is allowed to completely ferment, nearly all (but unlikely completely all) off the sugarsa will be gone from the juice. At this point you have “Hard” cider (or just cider if you live outside the USA).

At this point, the airlocks are removed and a bacteria is introduced (or allowed to self-introduce) to the cider. This bacteria turns the alcohol into acedic acid- which is the stuff that gives vinegar its strong taste and smell.

It is unlikely that there would be a complete transformation of all the alcohol, so yes there is most likely alcohol in the vinegar.

However, it is in amounts so small as to be nearly impossible to detect.

I use white vinegar for cat spray. It totally removes the smell from anything and if a cat sprays on clothes, blankets, duffle bags just was them with vinegar and the smell goes. We also use White vinegar, olive oil and lemon juice and water it helps maintain your kidneys and liver and you feel more energetic and your skin starts to look smother.

Back in the mid 60’s and even today some mothers and grandmothers use vinegar to assist in teaching naughty youths, teens and even adults who need lessions.
    1. Mouth washing for naughty mouths, works better then soap and safer.
    2. Used after spanking, or after using a switch, cane or brissel brush. should be poured on directly after the punishment, for proper effects.

Other helpful uses can be used in leather shoes, boot’s and heels a table spoon full ov vinegar, will keep your foot wear, socks and nylon clad feet smelling beautiful and sexy.

  139. 139 Chris

Putting a tablespoon worth of vinegar in your shoes does make sense but it doesn’t really sound right. What it does is just add to the bacteria that’s already inside the shoe.

A better idea would be to regularly soak/clean your shoes in vinegar. That way, everything is washed out instead of added in.

  140. 140 Kids Games

Wow, what can’t vinegar do? I had no idea it had so much good bacteria in it. Definitely gonna try it next time I have a cold.
