Asthma : Chronic Disease Of The Respiratory System

Asthma is a disease that causes the airways of the lungs to tighten. Asthma attack is when the lungs aren’t getting enough air to breathe. It usually happens to children and teens. In the USA alone, 6000 asthma patients die per year in a population of some 10 million patients. I believe that better control of the condition may help prevent some of these deaths. We should all learn the causes and the preventive measures before it is too late. So symptoms of asthma include :

  • Trouble breathing
  • Wheezing
  • Coughing
  • Chest pain
  • Chest tightness

Triggers of asthma can be found everywhere, inside and outside the home. Several examples are :

  • mold
  • dust mites
  • secondhand smoke
  • cockroaches
  • cats
  • dogs
  • air pollution (such as ozone, small particles, and pollen)
  • foods
  • respiratory infections
  • exercise

To prevent asthma, talk to a doctor. The doctor will work with patients to keep them from having asthma attacks. Usually doctors will talk about identifying triggers, getting rid of them and medicines that should be taken. If it’s a pet cat, you gotta give it up for adoption. Health comes first anyway.

Asthma should be contained and treated properly. Here’s a cool asthma action card for kids by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America.
