Little Known Natural Home Remedies For Diarrhea

I had diarrhea on Monday morning. It was bad. I woke up at 4am and went to the toilet 3 times. I had another one when I woke up at 9am. Let me tell you, it was painful. The area around my tummy felt sore. I felt weak. My reason for diarrhea was dirty food. I ate at a roadside stall nearby my house the night before. Now it’s in my blacklisted list. I had work to do and needed to stop and cure diarrhea. So, I went out on a home made remedy hunting spree and came up with these info.

Diarrhea is often caused by viruses and bacteria toxins. Part of the digestion process includes mixing up food with water. So food is actually watery before it reaches the colon, as the colon’s job is to suck up water and leave the remaining as semisolid stools. An inflamed colon inhibits absorption, thus watery stools result.

Once the body detects something wrong with the food content, it will want to dispose of it. If it’s detected early, it’s purged from the top. Once it enters the lower intestines, the only way out is anally. Immediately, Na+ is transported from other parts of the body to the gut, causing CL- and HCO3- to flow passively with water. This in turn triggers the intestine to contract, pushing the contents out through anal tunnel. This is the body’s natural self defense mechanism which should never be prevented. Meds like Loperamide should not be used because it prevents contractions, leaving the virus / bacteria toxin still intact in the body.

Stop the virus, not stop the body. Strengthen the body, instead of preventing it from doing it’s job. Here are 8 natural home remedies that is commonly found in every household which can be used to stop diarrhea.

  1. Bananas
  2. Helps to make firmer bowels. Know that a lot nutrients are lost from the body when a diarrhea occurs and potassium is one of the most. Bananas will not only help absorb excess fluid, they will also help replenish potassium levels.

  3. Blueberries/Blackberries
  4. Blueberries are rich in anthocyanosides, which have antioxidant and antibacterial properties. Tannin, an astringent that is found mostly in teas, helps to stop excess secretion from the intestinal lining.

  5. Chamomile
  6. Chamomile tea has antispasmodic properties. Know that black tea also contain tannins.

  7. Garlic
  8. The best natural anti bacteria. Learn to love it. Wrap up chopped, raw garlic into any type of edible leaf and swallow it with water if you have to.

  9. Toast
  10. Toast helps to firm bowel movements as it is bland and starchy.

  11. Rice
  12. Rice can be handled easily by recovering diarrhea victims. The starchiness reduces the amount of fluid lost and restores intestinal flora, which leads to a speedy recovery.

  13. Water
  14. Drink a cup each hour that you are awake. I started at 10am every hour until 10pm at night.

  15. Yogurt
  16. ‘Live cultures’ are friendly bacteria that provide a layer of protection in the intestines. Taken after diarrhea, yogurt helps to generate lactic acid to wipe out bacterial toxins. Diarrhea caused by oral antibiotics is preventable when ‘live culture’ yogurt is taken together. Antibiotics will kill all types of bacteria, including good ones, but ‘live culture’ replenishes the good ones. I took a cup of ‘live culture’ yogurt before lunch, the day I had diarrhea.

Last but not least,

  1. Avoid caffeinated drinks because they can irritate the bowel.
  2. Avoid carbonated drinks as they can affect intestinal contractions and make diarrhea worse.
  3. Avoid alcohol. Causes digestive disturbances.
  4. Avoid cold drinks. Digestion is aided by warmth.
  5. Avoid dairy products, except yogurt as no enzymes will be available to break down milk sugar during this period.

or beer.

🙂 Just Kidding. babies love carrots…make sure you used the unsweetened baby food or make your own in the blender. See my smoothie below…fit for a baby…might want to leave out the ginger…

Wow! This is the best information that anyone could come up with. This is very useful to know. My mom had diarrhea with some dosage and she found this very useful. It worked!! 🙂

Hi Moby:

I have heard many people have great luck with Olive Oil. For myself…it does not work and medically, I am not certain it would…because their is nothing in it that would repair your gut.

But, hey, it is worth a shot! Go for it and let us know how it goes. 🙂

Good luck,

I would avoid Yogurt as well…any good the active cultures might do are cancelled out by the sugar. Sugar feeds the yeast or candida. For good reason the nickname of thus bug in your gut is “leaky gut”.

I use the following “smoothie” that cures diarrhea…safe for infants, men, women even grandma. 🙂

Small piece fresh Ginger — go easy or it will be too HOT to eat.
1/2 Teaspoon Apple Cider
About 10 Organic Spinach leaves

Black Seed Oil

Blend in your high speed blender…I have a Ninja and it really SMOOTHS it out. If my daughter makes it…she will slice banana in it. It is YUMMY!!!

Alternate (ALL decaff):
Chamomile Tea
Raspberry Tea (leaves if possible) you can snack on a few berries too
Blackberry Tea (leaves if possible) you can snack on a few berries too

Take the following:

Garlic (if you are brave put it in your smoothie…me…I take the capsules)
Vitamin B12 and other B vitamins
Probiotic — make sure at least 20 billion active cultures and at least 7 different bacteria. Any less you are just wasting your money. There is one out there if you can find it…it has 30 billion active cultures and 15 different bacteria…all super bugs. But you will have to search for it.

Read labels for dose.

Drink lots of water…you will get dehydrated. Drink a minimum of one gallon a day.

I wouldn’t eat Rice, toast or anything else. The problem is not soaking up the excess water in your gut…the problem is to restore your gut to optimum health. White bread and White rice are both terribly bad for you. The whiter the bread the quicker you are dead. However, chicken is worse for you than white bread. Another topic for another time.

Get plenty of rest…and use my formula for better gut health. I would take the smoothies 4 or 5 times a day…then once your gut uis better…drink the smoothie daily to maintain.

Good luck…Please post a response if you want to know what each of these items does to cure your diarrhea.

After such smoothie . My nex six hours will be in the toilet. White bread helps a little but fruits? NOOO!

Hi, Thanks for your top-notch article. Actually, In most cases, diarrhea can be treated at home and it will resolve itself in a few days. Drink plenty of fluids, and follow the “BRAT” diet (bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast) to help ease symptoms. Take care to ensure infants and children stay hydrated. Electrolyte solutions such as Pedialyte can be helpful.
